AI Chat Apps for Creative Storytelling and Roleplay
If you use AI chat for stories, the features that matter are memory for your plot, a place to keep world details, a way to steer the story, and a way to keep your chats when a service changes. This page lists the story tools each service describes on its own pages, read on October 21, 2026. We have not tested them, and we do not rank them.

Bring your chats to Castmanor
Paste a chat or add screenshots, and your character picks up where you left off. It is free, for adults.
Free. Adults only. Everyone here is an AI character.
Story tools in the apps that replace Character.AI for roleplay
Rows are in alphabetical order. “Not checked” means we did not read that part of the service’s pages.
| Service | Story tools its own pages describe |
|---|---|
| Castmanor | Memory notes built from your chats, including a running summary of your story together, which you can see and edit. Characters can write to you first. Short episodes you can watch, with the characters you can talk to afterwards. You can bring a chat from another app by pasting it, adding screenshots or adding a file. |
| Character.AI | Character definitions of up to 32,000 characters with dialogue examples. Scenes, which you build from a setting and let users play with any character or a main character. Comics, which turn your characters and personas into multi-page comic stories in the mobile app. Lorebooks, which the help center says are in beta and available to c.ai+ subscribers. |
| JanitorAI | Scripts, a Scenario field on the character page, and a help article with a memory template that includes a Current Plot Points section. |
| Kindroid | A backstory and key memories, and chat tools such as Rewind, which removes up to your last 10 messages, and editing your latest message. |
| Nomi | Group chats, which its wiki says include narrators and NPCs, group chat memory and autoplay. |
| SillyTavern | World Info (also called Lorebooks), group chats, and Checkpoints and branches that clone a chat up to a message so you can try another direction. It is free software you run yourself. |
| SpicyChat | Lorebooks, Director Mode, which lets you steer the AI with /cmd instructions, group chat, and a Search Command. |
Tools for authors, novelists and worldbuilders
- Keep world details in a Lorebook or World Info instead of the character’s definition. Character.AI’s help center explains why: details in the definition take up space in every reply, while a Lorebook entry only appears when its keyword comes up.
- Put what the character must always remember in the definition, and put the rest in lore entries. The same help article says Lorebooks and definitions work best together.
- Keep a plain-text copy of your best chats. See how to turn chats into stories and eBooks.
- Back up characters you wrote, so that a change at one service never takes them with it. See how to back up your characters.
Interactive episodes and mysteries
Castmanor has short episodes with its characters, made with AI. You watch an episode and can then talk to the characters. The people, voices and pictures in the episodes are not real, as its Terms say. Its character catalog has a Mystery & Spies group, and groups for Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Adventure & Games and Historical stories.
Character.AI’s Scenes are the other format in this guide: you set up a situation, and users play it with a character. Whether a mystery works well in any of these depends on the model and on how you steer it, which a short trial shows better than a feature list.
Slow-burn stories and dynamic fiction
A slow burn needs the AI to remember where the relationship stands. Three habits help in any app.
First, write the relationship down. JanitorAI’s memory template has a Relationship Dynamic line, for example “rivals with unresolved feelings.” Second, put the pacing rule near the top of the definition, because Character.AI’s guide says the AI reads top to bottom and what comes first matters most. Third, steer in the chat when the story speeds up. SpicyChat’s Director Mode exists for this.
Castmanor is for adults (18+) and every character is an AI. Romance and dark themes are welcome. Explicit sexual content is not allowed, and a scene that heads that way fades out.
Questions and answers
Is there a free AI roleplay chat app?
Castmanor is free today for adults, and SillyTavern is free software you run yourself, though it needs an AI model that may cost money. Character.AI says its free messaging is unlimited.
What is a good Character.AI replacement for roleplay?
We do not rank services. The table lists the story tools each one describes, so you can match them to your needs.
Is there a Character.AI alternative for writers?
Services with lore tools (Lorebooks, World Info), steering commands and chat exports suit writers. See the table, and keep your own copies of your chats.
Can I chat with fictional characters with AI?
Yes. Castmanor’s characters are fictional AI characters, and every one is labeled as an AI. Its characters do not play real people.
Is there an AI chat app with episodes I can watch and talk to?
Castmanor has short episodes made with AI, with the characters you can talk to afterwards.
Is there an AI chat for mystery stories?
Castmanor has a Mystery & Spies group of characters. Character.AI’s Scenes let creators set up a situation. We have not tested how well either handles a mystery plot.
Is there an AI chat app for slow-burn stories?
Any app can do it if it remembers the relationship. Write the relationship down, put the pacing rule near the top of the definition, and steer in the chat.
