Leaving Character.AI: a neutral guide
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2026. Its sale is due to close around late November or early December, and the platform winds down if no buyer is found. This page explains how to take your data with you, how to delete it, and where you can go.
Take your data with you
Character.AI says an export takes three to four weeks, and the download link it emails you expires after seven days. Request it today so it arrives in time, and do not delete your account before it arrives: deleting first loses your chats. On the web: Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data. In the app: Profile, settings icon, Legal & Privacy, Export Data.

On the web, follow the same path and choose Delete Account. In the app, open your Profile, tap the settings icon and choose Remove Account. Character.AI says deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed, so download your export first.
