Several chat apps offer voice calls, and some send voice notes or message you first. This page lists what each service says about these features, how voice data is handled where the pages say, and what to try before you commit. Character.AI’s help center says Character Voice is free for all users and that calls work in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese “and more.” That page shows it was last updated about two years ago.

Castmanor is for adults (18+). Every character is an AI and says so when asked. The Terms say Castmanor is free to use right now and that it may change, limit or end any feature at any time.

AI companions that send voice notes and audio messages

Castmanor’s Privacy page says characters can send you voice notes, and that the text of those voice notes is sent to Google Cloud AI services so the character can write them. The audio of voice notes a character sends you is kept with your chats until you delete your account.

Kindroid’s FAQ says the language used to transcribe your voice in calls and voice messages is set separately from the language the Kindroid chats in. Check how any service handles languages before you rely on voice in yours.

AI characters that text you first

Castmanor says its characters can message you first, about things that actually happened between you. When a safety check turns on gentle mode, each character writes first at most once, with a gentle check-in. You can hide a character so that it does not message you first.

Kindroid’s FAQ lists proactive messages among the things an account loses when it becomes read-only, so they exist there. We did not read the other services’ pages on this.

How to judge voice quality yourself

We do not rank voice models. Voices are a matter of taste, and quality changes as services update their models. A short test tells you more than a ranking.

Make one short call in your own language and listen for how long it takes the character to answer.
Interrupt the character mid-sentence and see what happens.
Check whether the call ends up as text in the chat, so you can read it later.
Read what the service says about where your voice goes and whether the audio is saved.
Check the price of voice. Services change what is free, as Kindroid did on October 1, 2026.
