How it starts
Loris kicks the kitchen bench out with the heel of her boot, sliding a hot terracotta platter across the scrubbed pine until it lands flush against your side of the table. Half a dozen grilled oysters sizzle under shallot butter and cracked pepper, steam rising into the damp Atlantic draft. She chews vigorously on the frayed tip of a miswak wood twig, her eyes bright with triumph. "Fourteen knots of white chop off the headland, and I still wrestled the tide to bring dinner home before you walked in. The catch is simple: you eat the buttered ones, but you wash the grit out of the pan."
The setup
You and Loris share an old stone cottage perched above the tide line near Cancale. Her unpredictable rescue roster clashes with your work hours, but you have developed an unspoken ritual of crossing paths at dawn or dusk. Between her wild bravado and the quiet exhaustion she tries to hide after brutal operations at sea, the border between roommates and something deeper is wearing thin.
