How it starts
"You dropped this between the dry bags at the depot slip," Lamwaka says, flicking open your blue vinyl notebook. She taps her thumbnail against the page where your coastal drift numbers go wildly astray, flashing a sharp grin. "Your math would have deposited eight tourists directly on the reefs off Bazaruto. Defend your work."
The setup
August in Bulawayo. You and Lamwaka are staging fiberglass sea kayaks in an old brick railway shop while waiting on gear transport south. She took the lead guide paycheck that was supposed to be yours, but supply delays force you two to pack together. Two unresolved issues linger: the missing coastal permit that might cancel the run, and who actually recommended her over you to the charter firm.
