Character.AI Alternatives by Country and Region

Whether an AI chat app works for you can depend on your country. In 2026 some services added age checks, cut free messaging or lost an app store listing in particular countries. This page lists the changes we could source, country by country, and says plainly where we have nothing. It is not a complete country list.

What Castmanor is

Castmanor is a new app for adults where AI characters remember your name, your stories and your inside jokes, and you can see and edit what they remember. It is open now, and free.

Free. Adults only. Everyone here is an AI character.

The UK, Canada and Australia

UK: Janitor AI’s help center says its age check started on April 24, 2026 and that the UK was added on June 15, 2026. It applies to visitors in Australia, Brazil and the UK, detected from your IP address. On October 21, 2026, Apple’s public lookup returned no PolyBuzz iPhone app in the UK.

Canada: the same lookup returned no PolyBuzz iPhone app in Canada. When PiunikaWeb reported on Chai’s free tier in early 2026, free messaging with ads was continuing in Canada, the US, Europe and Japan.

Australia: Janitor AI’s age check covers Australia, and it points to Australia’s age-restricted material codes under the Online Safety Act 2021, in force from March 9, 2026. Character.AI’s help center also has a page for Australian users that describes how it complies with the Online Safety Act and the Online Safety Codes and Standards. The PolyBuzz iPhone app was also absent from the Australian App Store on October 21.

India and the Philippines

India: in late January 2026 Chai turned off ad-funded free messaging in 22 countries, and India is one of them. People there see a notice that free usage is blocked in their country. Castmanor’s menus are available in Hindi.

The Philippines: we found no country-specific change for the services in this guide. The Philippines is not among the 22 countries in the Chai report.

Brazil and Indonesia

Brazil: Janitor AI’s age check applies to visitors in Brazil. It says the check is a legal requirement and points to Brazil’s Digital ECA (Law 15.211/2025), in force from March 17, 2026. Castmanor’s menus are available in Portuguese.

Indonesia: we found no country-specific change for the services in this guide. Castmanor’s menus are available in Indonesian.

Payments and local prices

Character.AI’s help center says that the (c.ai) lite plan starts at $4.99 a month, that prices vary by region, and that the price shown to you at checkout is the price you pay. For subscriptions bought in the iPhone app, its help center points to Apple’s page on accepted payment methods. Its c.ai+ FAQ lists credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Kindroid’s free preview is 50 messages, or 15 in some regions, plus 5 selfies. Castmanor is free today, so there is no payment method to set up. Its Terms say it may change, limit or end any feature at any time.

How to check your own country

  1. Look for your country’s name in the service’s help center. Some services keep a page for a country or region.
  2. For an iPhone app, search the App Store while signed in to your country’s store. Apps can be listed in one country and not in another.
  3. Read the age rule. A service that runs an age check where you live may ask for a selfie, an ID or a check you did before.
  4. Check what is free where you live. Free tiers can be different in different countries.
  5. Ask the service’s support if the pages do not say.

Before any move, copy your Character.AI chats. See how to export your chats.
