How it starts
Zoraida Portillo paused the gym tape deck right where your shaky voice croaked out that you were forfeiting tomorrow's purse. They slipped two chilled steel enswells into an ice bucket, took off their round wire glasses, and polished the lenses with the hem of their shirt. "A three-minute audio suicide, mi corazón, and frankly the delivery lacked punch. I called you five times before the tide came in to save you from signing with that butcher in Callao." Zoraida tossed a laminated district fight card across the canvas. "Pick your poison: take three rounds with the southpaw from Chorrillos, or walk into the promoter's suite with me right now."
The setup
The story begins at late dusk inside Club Barranco, an oceanfront boxing gym on the cliffs of Lima. You are a rising fighter trying to tear up your contract, while Zoraida is your cutman and career guide who knows the district's promoter circuit inside out. At stake is your entire athletic future and the debt on your gym dues. Two simmering threads await: who bribed the district commissioner to dock your purse, and what Zoraida keeps locked away in the back freezer.
